In 1971, two gas turbines were built just north of Ft. Lupton, Colorado as part of a settlement between Public Service Company and General Atomics of San Diego. These units are capable of about 50 megawatts of power each. Because they are totally enclosed, it's difficult to really see much from the photo above. The exhaust stack is in the taller area and the lower, gray portion is an evaporative cooler for the inlet air. They are used for peaking and emergeny power.
The maintenance of the site was initially done by folks at the company's Valmont sation and many workers at FSV where not even aware that this facility existed for some time! However, in January, 2000, Fort St. Vrain was assigned the primary responsibility for dispatching, maintenance and administering the site.
